Top 8 Most Beautiful Mountain Top Views in Austria

Nowhere in the world quite compares to Austria. A landlocked country in the heart of Europe overflowing with diverse, awe-inspiring vistas bringing in 30 million international tourists annually. Where hills come alive with snow-capped peaks, lush valleys carpeted in vibrant wildflowers, crystal-clear lakes, and castles at every turn.

Schafberg

5,850ft above Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut region, the Schafberg is a view you simply cannot miss. Reach the top by hiking or by boarding the Schafbergbahn, the steepest cog railway in Austria.

Gmundnerberg

The Gmundnerberg is one of the most famous panoramic mountains in Upper Austria. It is where the dead mountains come alive and the place we come to as often as we can. You can reach the top by hiking or driving to the top–we’ve always done the latter.

Loser Mountain

The Loser Mountain summit is a small plateau with a limitless panoramic view of the surrounding Ausseerland peaks

Duration: 15 minutes drive up the toll road and 15 minutes walk up to Augstsee.
Best season: Summer and Fall

Traunstein

The Traunstein is the highest mountain on the Traunsee peaking at 5,548 ft and directly across the lake from our home. It is an iconic mountain with an incredible view. The only way to enjoy the view is by climbing to the top.

The Europakreuz at the Feurkogel

The Europakreuz is one of the most popular hiking destinations at the Feurkogel and for good reason. From the cross, you have a panoramic view of the Traunsee, Langbathsee, and the mountain peaks of the Salzkammergut.

Untersberg

The Untersberg straddles Austria and Germany on the outskirts of Salzburg. This Massif became famous for its role in The Sound of Music. Whether you hike up or take the convenient cable car, the views will be majestic. Make sure to check the webcam though before you set out on your adventure. It can be disappointing to reach the top only to find yourself in a thick cloud with no views.

Baumgartlkopf

The Baumgartlkopf lies within the Hohe Tauern National Park among the mesmerizing Tyrolean Alps. The sunrise views, the shrieking marmots, the sharing of the trail with no one but a flock of sheep, and the howling wind at the highest peaks are noises we have not forgotten. Hopefully you will have a chance to experience it too.

Gaisberg

An iconic peak overlooking Salzburg, revealing the city's charm against the backdrop of the majestic Austrian Alps. Reach the top by car or on foot any time of year.
