Week 172: A Hike Around Almsee

This week’s adventure led us back to the Almsee–a lake trail we visited over 100 weeks ago in week 53 and week 59.

The Almsee is a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by the Totes Gebirge mountain range. With 33 lakes scattered around Upper Austria, the Almsee is one of our favorites and since the weather in Austria has been unusually warm for February, we harnessed up the pups and drove 35 minutes to the Almtal Valley for a hike.

As we walked along the lake trail, we passed vibrant wildflowers which were popping up sooner than usual due to the warm weather. We saw a gaggle of swans and a few people attempting to take a cold plunge into the lake. Then Charlie decided to get into the water to taunt the ducks floating by.

After our hike, we grabbed cups of punsch and a couple of Bauernkrapfens. Our very favorite part of hiking in Austria is where we get to indulge in the yummy homemade food afterward. Bauernkrapfen translates to “farmer's doughnut” and is a fried dough filled with a sweet filling, like apricot jam. Unlike the American-style doughnuts with a hole in the center, Bauernkrapfen is often round and without a hole.

Watch the video and you’ll see Charlie try to snag a bite around the 2:16 marker. He wasn’t successful, but we still gave both pups a piece.
