Week 18: I landed a job in Austria
This week we drove to Gesäuse National Park located in Styria, Austria. Two hours from us and just an hour north of Graz. Gesäuse is Austria’s youngest National Park. With the raging Enns and Salza Rivers, the limestone mountains, and the vast forest, there are so many things to do in this National Park. We were truly unprepared. We only saw a small section and a lot of things were closed due to the winter conditions, so we plan to come back in the summer to go rafting down the rivers, horseback riding and maybe even canyoning if we feel really adventurous. We took several winding roads to get here, so if you get car sick easily, don’t forget to take some medicine before the drive.
I landed a job
Over the last seven days, I have had several interviews with advertising and design agencies in Austria. On Friday, I landed a freelance job! Freelancing is a dream career for a lot of people. Working with only the clients you want, setting your own hours, and being in charge of your own work. Sounds pretty great, right? To be living abroad and having the flexibility of a freelancer is definitely the perfect position for me. I am excited for this next phase of my career and I know this will be the first of many freelancing jobs I take on.

I landed on Mars
Back in 2019, NASA launched their ‘Send Your Name to Mars’ campaign. This initiative gives people the opportunity to join the launch and celebrate another huge milestone in space exploration. On July 30, 2020, the rover, “Perseverance” made the seven-month solo voyage to the red planet. There were 10.9 million passengers aboard—at least in name form, stenciled on tiny chips affixed to the rover. My name being one of those 10.9 million. And on February 18, 2021, the rover touched town on Mars.
There is a popular adage and mantra for the Mars Rover “Perseverance will get you anywhere.” Whether it is a 300-million-mile journey to Mars or a job in Austria, perseverance will always bring you to the places you want to be–if you keep going.
