Week 181: Jennerbahn in Germany
Since we landed in Austria in 2020, the dogs have never crossed the border into another country until this weekend. We left Austria and spent the afternoon walking around the Bavarian Alps in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
The last time we were here was in Week 106 with Eric’s dad, but this time we were here to explore a mountain overlooking the Königssee–The Jenner. A mountain standing at 1,874 meters (6,148 feet) tall.
With the help of a brand-new (as of 2019) cable car it made the journey very easy with the dogs.

Once we reached the top station, we continued hiking for 15 minutes to stand at the summit.
From up here, we could see the Untersberg, a mountain we visited in Week 56, as well as Hitler’s Eagles Nest, a place we have visited 3 times now.
We also got an up-close look at a mountain called the Watzmann - the third highest in Germany, and a mountain we hope to summit someday before we move away.
After our short hike and a stop at the Jenneralm panoramic restaurant, we got back on the cable car and went down to the middle station to walk around the circular path along the pond.
For our final stop of the day, we crossed off the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse.
Price: €9/car
The road twists and turns through the Bavarian Alps. It is a must for anyone who looking for a pretty view without the hassle of hiking. And, for anyone wishing to stand in the same spot as Julie Andrews or Harrison Ford, this road has served as a movie background for movies like The Sound of Music and ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’.
Overall review of our weekend adventure?
The views? Jaw-dropping.
The food? Delish.
The price? A bit much, but worth it! I think if we hadn’t had the dogs and arrived earlier in the day, we would have hiked to the top to cut down the cable car price, but we loved sharing this adventure with them. We also love that they were able to cross off a new country in their doggy passports :)
