Week 9: Hiking in Altaussee

Work is done for the year and we’re finally on a much-needed winter break. We have a lot of fun things planned for the next two weeks including skiing in the Austrian alps, Christmas, ice skating, visiting Hallstatt, Salzburg, and many other parts of Austria.

This weekend, we hit the trails again. We drove an hour south to Altaussee, a village located in Styria, Austria. Altausee has the largest active salt mine in all of Austria and if you’re interested in learning a little history, famous artworks were stored inside the salt mines during WWII. We would have loved to explore the salt mine, but it was closed because of Covid. Altaussee also has a beautiful lake that takes about two hours to walk around. It’s a really easy hike, so friends and family, this will be one of the stops when you visit.

On our week 2 hike, we said we felt like we just walked into a page of a fairytale book. On our week 6 hike, we said if fairies existed they would live at Mair Alm. This week, we felt like we were walking around in a snow globe. No matter how we say it, we are living in the most beautiful place we could imagine, and we can’t wait to have our friends and family visit next year to show it all off.
