7 Must-See Waterfalls in Austria

While Iceland and Norway boast thousands of waterfalls, Austria is home to a respectable 700 cascading waterfalls through its picturesque alpine landscapes. Ranging from 1000-foot plunges to tiny trickles, here is our list of 7 must-see waterfalls in Austria.


Gollinger

Situated near the village of Golling in Salzburg, this waterfall is known for its charming location within a forested gorge. The water cascades in a series of picturesque drops, making it a popular spot for visitors.

The official season is May-October. However, it is possible to visit as access to the waterfall trail is not blocked between November and April.

Stuibenfall

The rushing waters of Horlachbach Creek cascade 159 metres (522 ft) over cliffs, weather-scarred rocks and moss-covered boulders. It's Tirol's tallest waterfall and can be explored along a new complex of trails and viewing platforms. For those who really want to get close to the waters, there is a via ferrata fixed-rope climbing route.

The falls behind Hallstatt are perhaps one of the most viewed waterfalls in Austria because of the high number of tourists who have Hallstatt already on their must-see list.

Nixenfall

Nixenfall, also in Upper Austria at the south end of the Attersee. A height of 164 feet, it is considered a small but beautiful one. A waterfall that you probably won’t see on any other bloggers’ lists, but it’s a local one and definitely worth it if you’re in the area.

The Teufelsbach Waterfall flows in the picturesque Montafon Valley, which is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
