Week 70: Skiing at Hinterstoder

We went skiing in Upper Austria's World Cup venue–Hinterstoder.

We drove past this ski resort in week 25. This ski resort is just an hour from our house in Gmunden. The enchanting winter landscape and lively huts at Hinterstoder make it a popular place to go. A couple of weeks ago we invested in our own ski helmets, so were happy to back skiing this weekend to try them out!

From the valley station, we took cable cars and lifts until we reached the Schafkogel ski run at 2000 meters. The higher up we went, the whiter the conditions became. From the top, it appeared pretty steep. It was mostly because the fog hindered our ability to see the bottom clearly. Once we started down the mountain, the fog began to clear and it was a simple route.

Things cleared up once we came down a little bit.

We have been skiing quite a bit this winter and are improving with every run we do, even though we had a few spills this time. The first was when a man collided with Eric (it was the man’s fault). The man just laid there for a few minutes and Eric is sitting there trying to speak German to make sure he was okay. Thankfully, he was fine and we were able to all get up and continue down the mountain.

Yay for good helmets.

We typically stick to the “blue” routes, which are good for beginners. We accidentally took a “red” route this time. Let’s just say it started out promising and ended up with me walking down the mountain. It would have been fine, but after a wipeout (yay for good helmets, again), the hill was so steep I could not get my ski back on. Thankfully, a friendly skiier came to my rescue and helped me put it back on. After slowly sliding down a little further, I was able to finish the route at full speed.
